AMAT

The initiative

In January 2019, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) established a technical assistance mechanism entitled Ammunition Management Advisory Team (AMAT) to support States in ammunition management in accordance with the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG).

The mission

To strengthen the capacities of states to improve the safety and security of ammunition stockpiles, thus contributing to the global reduction of the risk of accidental explosions and illicit diversion, ensuring safer communities and more stable states and societies.

AMAT objectives & lines of service
AMAT works with its partners to fulfill three objectives, namely: increased awareness of good practice, strengthened national capacities and more effective and sustainable international cooperation and assistance.

Mode of operation
AMAT responds to assistance requests from states, partners and the UN SaferGuard Programme, with due consideration to available resources, organisation of work and assessment of risks involved.

Governance & Donors
AMAT is a part of the GICHD and operates in a strategic partnership with the UN SaferGuard Programme. It is governed by the GICHD Council of Foundation and receives advice from the AMAT Advisory Council. AMAT is financed by: Austria, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the European Union and the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs.

The team
AMAT is in 2020 ten staff members from diverse backgrounds. The expertise of the team covers the technical, policy and programmatic areas pertaining to Conventional Ammunition Management and Arms Control. Beyond its staff capacity, AMAT welcomes seconded experts from states to expand its ability to serve states and partners in an effective manner.
